Special interim storage facilities for waste must be approved under waste legislation to store problem substances in accordance with the Closed Substance Cycle and Waste Management Act. With our environmental halls we have such an interim storage facility right on our site.
The environmental halls have been built using the latest knowledge of water and ground protection. Their floors consist of sealed concrete plates, which are also equipped with a CFC-resistant coating and built-in inspection system.
This provides double security to prevent harmful substances entering the ground. Any contaminated liquids in the halls are collected in subterranean tank facilities and then reused.
The halls have a surface area of more than 2,000 m² and are 12.5 m high. Problem substances can be loaded directly onto lorries inside the halls using heavy equipment.
Dry loading and storage of scrap that contains oils or emulsions has another advantage: the scrap does not come into contact with rain water, which could also be contaminated by the oil and would become a problem substance.
Here is an overview of our environmental protection activities:
1990
Construction of environmental halls 1 and 2
1994
Refurbishment around the LU 1250 scrap cutter
Refurbishment at the boundary with the DB tracks
1996
Extension of the boundary wall with the DB tracks
Refurbishment at the boundary with the DB tracks
Refurbishment of the rear storage spaces (by the water)
1997
Extension of the wharfage to make optimal use of the waterway
Refurbishment of the wharfage and around the scrap storage
Construction of a further roofed scrap warehouse
